¿Qué es Coaching?

So, what really is Coaching?

We like the quote from Tony Stoltzfus that says:
“Coaching is practicing the disciplines of believing in people in order to empower them to change”
Fundamentally coaching is a conversation, two people talking to each other. It is a special way of talking that leads to a process in the person receiving the coaching and that process leads to change and growth in whatever area that is the subject of the conversation.
The one thing a coach will not do is to give advice. There are many other types of conversations where we give advice, but coaching is all about you finding out what you want to do and how to do it. We as coaches help you in that process, we do not know half of what you know about the area that concerns you, but we do know how to help you clarify where you want to go and how to set goals and take action that will lead you there.
It might be helpful to compare coaching to mentoring. When we mentor someone we’re sharing our own journey as someone that has more experience than the person being mentored. We know more and therefore can give better reflections and advice. But when we coach someone we don’t work out of our own experience in the field, but through questions and dialogue help the person find their own way.

It might seem unusual at first, we are after all very used to receiving, and often ignoring, advice. But the result of coaching are goals that actually come from you, and actions to get you to those goals that you have chosen and that you are motivated for because they make sense to you. And that’s a pretty good recipe for real change!
